Terrorism

Saleh Mohammad Ayub, Kalabagan, Dhaka
The assertion by the Honourable Home Minister that terrorism came into being with the assassination of Bangabandhu is not correct. Terrorism has been there since time immemorial. With the assassination of Bangabandhu terrorism has become multi-faced. We can easily trace the roots of terrorism in the Battle of Plassey in 1757, when the invading British forces in connivance with Mir Zafar terrorized the people of Bengal. Thereafter the people were again terrorized by the communal riots of 1947. Late President Ayub Khan terrorized the people by imposing martial law. The 1965 India Pakistan war terrorized the people . In 1971 late President Yahiya Khan imposed martial law thereby terrorizing the people once more. In December 1971, Bangladesh emerged as an independent country after nine months of independence war. Our memory is very short lived, most of us must have forgotten by now that the people were again terrorized by the JRB with the introduction of one party rule. Then came the nightmare, Bangabandhu was mercilessly killed along with other members of his family on August 15, 1975. With this changeover terrorism became multi-faced in Bangladesh. Shanti Bahini started terrorizing the people in the hill districts. With the assassination of late President Ziaur Rahman, another phase of terrorism was unleashed with the imposition of martial law by President Ershad. That is in brief the history of terrorism in Bangladesh.
