Shibir besieges RU proctor, holds rally

Leaders and activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) Rajshahi University (RU) unit yesterday besieged the university proctor for an hour as he tried to prevent them from holding a rally on the campus. Sources said around 100 Shibir men, led by Bangabandhu Hall unit President Shah Newaz Sachcho, were holding a rally on the campus at noon, defying the restrictions imposed earlier by the authorities on rallies and processions for an indefinite period. Hearing the news, Proctor Prof Chowdhury Zakaria, assistant proctors and police rushed to the spot and requested the Shibir men not to hold rally. Ignoring the request, the shibir men went ahead with their programme and at one stage, they besieged the proctor on the spot for an hour. The Shibir men also threatened to paralyse the campus if the killers of their leader Sharifuzzaman Nomani were not punished. Teachers and general students urged the university authorities to take immediate steps against the Shibir men who held a rally on the campus, defying the restrictions. When contacted, Proctor Zakaria said he urged the law enforcers to take legal steps against the Shibir leaders and activists who held a rally on the campus, defying the restrictions.
