Comilla University closed as BCL, Shibir men clash

Authorities yesterday closed Comilla University until October 15 after clashes between the activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League and Islami Chhatra Shibir left at least 25 students injured in the morning. The students were also asked to vacate their dormitories yesterday noon. Both BCL and Shibir brought out separate processions on the campus demanding resignation of Vice Chancellor Dr Zihadul Karim but activists of the two rival organisations got locked in a clash at one stage of their demonstrations. They attacked each other with sticks and stones, leaving 25 students injured. Eleven seriously injured ones were admitted to hospitals. Among the injured are Shovon, Ruhul Amin, Iman Hossain, Shahidul Islam, Saiful Islam, Sariful Bari and Abu Musa of BCL and Sojib, Tofayel, Mahabub Miazee, Habibur Rahman, Anwar and Shahadat of Shibir. The agitated students also ransacked several classrooms and office rooms and damaged windowpanes, doors, furniture and computers. On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Following an emergency meeting of the university Syndicate, authorities announced the decision to suspend all the classes and examinations until October 15. However, the university offices will remain open. A large number of police have been deployed to stave off further violence as a tense situation is prevailing in the area.
