Man gets life for killing wife, another for rape

A man was jailed for life in Bogra on Tuesday for killing wife while another was convicted in Gaibandha on Thursdayfor violating a teen-age girl. A court in Bogra on Tuesday jailed for life Meherul Islam, 31, son of Mokhlesur Rahman Manik of Dakkhin Para village in Dhupchachia upazila for killing his wife in 2006, reports UNB. The court also fined him Tk 25,000, in default, to suffer one year more RI. According to the prosecution, Meherul used to press his wife Joynab Khatun to involve in extra-marital affairs. As she turned down his proposal, Meherul started torturing her. On the night of August 24, 2006, Meherul picked up a quarrel with Joynab over the issue and at one stage murdered her at his rented house at Moddhya Palsha in the town. Our Correspondent in Gaibandha reports: One person was sentenced to life term imprisonment yesterday for violating a teenage girl in 2006. Judge Md Moniruzzaman of Gaibandha Woman and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 also fined rapist Moku Mia of village Pachim Bashhati under Sundarganj upazila, Tk 10,000, in default, to suffer six months more in jail. According to the prosecution, on May 27, 2006, Khadija Begun went to a relative's house leaving daughter Arifa Akhter Arshida,14, alone in her home. Accused Moku Mia of the same village entered the house and violated Arifa.
