5 killed in road accidents

Five people were killed in separate road accidents in Magura, Chittagong, Narail, Khagrachhari and Narayan-ganj yesterday. Our correspondent in Magura reports: One person was killed in a road accident in Wapda-square area on Magura-Faridpur highway in Magura yesterday. The deceased was identified as Shahadat Hossain, 70, of Doarpar area in Magura town. Police and locals said the accident occurred when a Meherpur-bound bus hit Shahadat while he was crossing the road riding a bicycle. Following the accident agitating people put up barricade on the road for about one hour. Staff correspondent in Chittagong adds: A minor boy was killed and three others were injured as a 'Chander Gari' (Jeep) plunged into a roadside lake on Bhatiary-Hathazari link road under Sitakunda upazila in Chittagong yesterday. Sources and witnesses said the Jeep carrying over 25 passengers skidded off and plunged into the lake near Bangladesh Military Academy golf club around 12.00pm as its driver lost control over the steering wheel. Most of the passengers managed to come out of the Jeep and swam to the bank. After half an hour members of Fire Service and Civil Defence rushed to the spot to conduct rescue operation and they recovered the body of Mishu, 7. A correspondent in Narail adds: A minor boy was killed in a road accident on Narail-Lohagara road near Masimdia Fine Brickfield in Narail yesterday. The dead was identified as Piklu, son of Humayun Kabir of Masimdia village under Narail Sadar upazila. Locals and police said the accident occurred when a passenger bus hit him at about 6:00pm while he was crossing the road. Police seized the bus and arrested its driver and helper. Our correspondent in Khagrachhari adds: A class-seven student was killed in a road accident in Alutila area under Khagrachhari Sadar upazila yesterday. She was identified as Chingprue Marma, 12, student of Natunkuri High School and daughter of Sathowai Marma. Police said the accident occurred when Chingprue fallen from a running jeep (locally known as Chander Gari) while she was returning home. Our correspondent in Narayanganj adds: A fish trader was killed in a road accident at Madanpur under Araihazar upazila in Narayanganj yesterday. The dead was identified as Jamaluddin, 45. Witnesses said while Jamaluddin was standing beside the road, a speeding microbus ran over him.
