16 jailed in Gopalganj for bank robbery

A court here on Monday sentenced 16 people to five years rigorous imprisonment in a bank robbery case. The convicts are M Tutul, Momin, Abdul Mannan, Hafizur Rahman, Murad, Farid, Miran Mollah, Rajib, Bachchu Chowdhury, Liton, Kala Mia, Jewel, Imran Sikder, Raju Mridha, Rana and Eskender Mollah of Kashiyani upazila of the district. Five of them -- Hafizur, Rajib, Bachchu, Raju, and Liton - were tried in absentia. The court also fined the convicts Tk 5,000 each, in default, to suffer five months more in prison. According to the prosecution story, the convicts looted Tk 4,41,819 and 18 bullets from the Joynagar Bazar branch of Rapuli Bank in Kashiyani upazila on January 9, 2005. After examining the records and witnesses, District Joint Sessions Judge M Solaiman handed down the verdict.
