Two BCL leaders arrested, arms recovered

Police on Wednesday night arrested two Chhatra League (BCL) leaders and recovered a loaded revolver from a hostel of Chandpur Government College. The arrestees are Tariqul Islam Ripon, 37, and Mujibur Rahman Khan Kayes, 38. Police yesterday produced the leaders in the court of Chandpur judicial magistrate. The court rejected their bail prayer and sent them to jail hajat. The arms were recovered from them after a clash between two factions of the student body. The BCL groups clashed allegedly over Tk 10 crore tender of Chandpur Town Protection Embankment Project of the Water Development Board (WDB). October 8 was the last date for submission of tender document for the project. From Wednesday afternoon the two groups armed with locally made weapons took position at different points in the town. Police raided the Sher-e-Bangla hostel at about 9am and arrested Ripon and Kayes from room no 213. During the raid, police recovered an England made revolver and six bullets from a ventilator of the room.
