TI report and we
1 December 2009, 17:00 PM

Transparency International (TI) is an international non-governmental organisation fighting corruption and trying to raise public awareness on the issue. On 17 November, 2009 it published the annual Corruption Perception Index (CPI).
I was amazed as well as delighted when I heard that Bangladesh has shown some progress in the report.
We should make all-out efforts to banish corruption from society.

While we might be tempted to 'take the compliment and run!', we can only benefit from a closer look at the reason. TI's notes on Bangladesh suggests that our improvement in the tables is due to the "caretaker government's nationwide crackdown on corruption" and "the introduction of institutional and legal reforms aimed at strengthening the government's capacity to tackle corruption."
The two years of the emergency period was an opportunity squandered but the improvement in the rankings at least shows that if not anything else we are capable of changing perceptions. The opportunity for true reform is still there.

At last we get a ray of hope in respect of anti-corruption in Bangladesh from the recent TI (Transparency International) report which was published on 17 November. According to that report, Bangladesh secured the 13th position scoring 2.4 along with Pakistan, Belarush & the Philippines which is better than the last year (10th) & comparatively the best from the year 2001 to 2007.
Undoubtedly, it is a great achievement & surely it will pave the way for more resistance against corruption. But we should not be smug with this report because though the score is better, corruption still remains. Dr. Iftekaruzzaman, the executive director of TIB, said that corruption would increase again unless we make effective parliament & parliamentary committees, ACC, EC, Human rights Commission law enforcement agencies etc. Therefore, the government should take the proper initiative on the basis of his statement and should also make all-out efforts to banish corruption from society.
