10 officials, staff of fake NGO sued in Satkhira

Ten officials and staff of a fake NGO at Patkelghata in Tala upazila were sued on Tuesday night on charge of collecting money from innocent villagers on false pretext of supplying relief materials to them. However, police arrested two of the accused while they were collecting Tk 400 from every villager at Manikhar on December 13. The arrestees are Karmojibi Mahila Sangstha director Kabirul Islam, 48, son of Moksed Ali and field officer Abdul Haque, 50, son of Paban Ali of village Balia-Shreemantokati in the same upazila. The other accused are Ashraful Islam Mithu, Rejaul Islam, Eman Ali, Saju Ahmed, Rejwan Ali, Asadul Islam, Parvin Akhtar and Rifat Uddin, police said. Set up by Ashraful Islam Mithu and Rejaul Islam of village Bharsa about a year ago, they employed 50 staff to collect Tk 150 to 400 from over 1,000 people of villages Bharsa, Achintala, Kumira, Bakshia, Cowgachha, Dhandia, Senergati, Jujkhola, Nagarghata, Jalalpur, Kheshra, Muragachha, Hariharnagar and adjoining villages. They also distributed some rice, pulse, oil and other things among them as a ploy to continue their illegal activities, police said.
