Arms, ammunition recovered from two districts

Police recovered four firearms from Chitholia in Mirpur upazila in Kushtia yesterday and another from Piadapara in Meherpur town the day before. The arms and ammunition recovered in Kushtia includes one 1.66 rifle, a single barrel rifle, a double barrel rifle, one 7.65 bore Italian pistol and 18 bullets. According to police, on a tip-off that outlawed Gono Mukti Fouz (GMF) kept some firearms at a secret place of Chitholia field, a police team led by assistant police superintendent (ASP) Alamgir Hossain raided the place at about 2:45 pm. Locating spot, the police team dug out the firearms and ammunition kept in separate polythene bags. Police have identified the owners of the arms and ammunition as Mojibar Rahman Babu and Siraj of Chitholia in Mirpur upazila. Police said, Babu is a regional leader of outlawed GMF while Siraj a top cadre of the party. Both are accused in a number of cases including for murder and extortion, police said. ASP Alamgir said, police have already launched a drive to arrest the two outlaws. In another incident, police arrested one Nazim Iqbal Mitul, son of Toammel Hossain of Piadapara in Meherpur town on Wednesday night. Police said on a tip-off that Mitul and his accomplices were threatening fishermen of Govipur village in Sadar upazila, a team led by officer-in-charge (OC) of Sadar police station Robiul Islam raided the place at about 9:30 pm and arrested him. Police recovered a pistol and two bullets from Mitul's possession. Accomplices of arrestee, however, managed to flee. According to police, fish dealer Mitul recently forcibly occupied several water bodies in the district and ousted fishermen from those. Police filed an arms case with Meherpur Sadar police against Mitul.
