Our Correspondent in Mymensingh reports: Some leaders of the BCL unit at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) yesterday demanded fresh BCL committee within December 31. They also threatened to go for hunger strike to realise the demand.
The BCL leaders were holding a press conference at Mymensingh Press Club yesterday afternoon.
The BCL men also brought out a procession on BAU campus in support of their demand.
They told newsmen that they want to celebrate the 62nd founding anniversary of BCL at BAU on January 4 under the new committee.
According to the constitution of BCL, the conference should be held every two years but the present BCL committee formed in 2003 is still clinging to the posts hampering the BCL activities at BAU, the leaders said.
They further alleged that the 111-member BCL body at BAU, tenure of which expired four years ago, is virtually a committee of 10 to 12 members as many of its members left the university on completion of their education.
In such a situation, the central BCL body should take proper steps immediately to form a new committee to gear up the BCL activities here, the leaders pointed out.
Contacted, president of BAU BCL unit Sarwar Morshed Akanda said, "We also want new leadership at BAU as per the student body's constitution. If the central BCL committee desires, the conference could be held any time", he said.
Rupesh Bhattacharya Rana, organising secretary of BCL read out the written statement at the press conference.
Among others BCL leaders Mustafizur Rahman Nahid, Azizur Rahman Ripon, Mustayeen Kabir Sohel, Abul Bashar Amjad, Reazul Islam, Mohsin Tarafder Raju, Riman Chandra Roy and FM Anwar Hossain Babu were present.
