Hartal for declaring Bajitpur a district

A Correspondent, Kishoreganj.
People of Bajitpur yesterday observed a half-day hartal to press their demand for upgrading the upazila to a district. Vehicles were off the roads and bus services from upazila headquarters to other parts of the country remained halted for eight hours from 6:00am to 2:00pm. Shopkeepers kept their shutters down, educational institutions were closed and attendance at banks and government offices was thin during the hartal called by Bajitpur Zila Bastabayan Committee. People from all walks of life gathered at upazila headquarters in the morning and took out a procession. They later joined a rally in front of a cinema with Upazila Chairman and Convener of Zila Bastabayan Committee advocate Sheikh AKM Nurunnabi Badal in the chair. The rally was addressed, among others, by Joint Secretary of the committee Rakib Pervez, Sanuar Ali Shah Selim, Indrajit Das and Mubarak Hossain Master. The speakers urged the government to declare Bajitpur a district and exclude it from the proposed Bhairab district. Otherwise, they threatened to a launch a tougher agitation programme.
