Indian cargo transit

A Natok Critic, Dhaka
Much is being written in our dailies about the matter; precipitated more by the unnecessary drama(Natok) about smuggling and security by the BNP our "Boro Natokio Party"! Lest they forget since they do not mention it, it was during their government that the dramatic import of illegal arms took place. Are they now therefore allergic about it? If not then why this senseless talk by them, every time, everywhere! The other matter which may be quite possible is that being aware of the nitty-gritty of arms smuggling, the BNP is afraid that it may happen again, given the close but shady link between, politicians and criminals. This then could be a case of their proverbial "once bitten twice shy" syndrome. The BNP should be open about it to get recognition for their experience. Only in that case, they may have a point about transit smuggling. Aside from these rather wishful thoughts and BNP's "natokio" ideas, the actual and reasonable expectations for Mongla and Chittagong ports and our "sick" railways cannot be denied. Both Mongla and Chittagong ports and Bangladesh Railways will generate more revenue. An ancillary benefit will be the much needed BMR of our Railways. Today unfortunately, railways are in sad neglect. These positive and vital points cannot simply be wished away, which BNP desires, for illogical or sinister(?) reasons! Given this reality, it should be in our interest to increase the utilisation of our two seaports through handling transit Indian cargo, both export and import.
