Satkhira civil society in aid of Sidr victims
Tk 4.5 lakh collected on first day
Speakers at a meeting here called upon the people of all walks of life, especially the affluent, to stand by the Sidr affected people of coastal areas in the country.
Civil society members organised the meeting to raise funds for helping the hurricane affected people. Held at the Satkhira Pres Club auditorium on Thursday, the meeting was presided by the superintendent of police (SP), Mirza Abdullahel Baki.
A five-member committee headed by (SP) Mirza Abdullahel Baki and Dr Abul Kalam Babla as its convenor and member secretary was formed to conduct the relief work. Sub-committees were also formed for the purpose.
Participants at the meeting spontaneously donated over Tk 4, 50,000 in cash and blankets worth over Tk 5 lakh while others made commitments to donate for the distressed.
Among others, eminent scientist Dr Matiur Rahman, Satkhira Chamber of Commerce and Industries president Sheikh Azhar Hossain, businessmen Dr Abul Kalam, Abdul Khaleque, Biswajit Sadhu, Alhaj Din Ali, Gour Pada Dutta and Dina Bandhu Mitra, shrimp traders Monoranjan Mukherjee, ABM Mustakin and Rashed Sarowar Khokon, NGO executives Mahmud Hasan and Abul Hossain, journalists Subhas Chowdhury, Abu Ahmed, Kazi Dulal, Manirul Islam Mini, Ramkrishna Chakraborty and Mostafizur Rahman addressed.
