Case Against Ru Teachers
Verdict now on Dec 4
The verdict in the case against six Rajshahi University teachers for allegedly violating emergency power rules will now be delivered on December 4.
Metropolitan Magistrate Ali Ahmed deferred the date of verdict as the assigned judge -- Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Ruhul Amin for trying the case-- was on leave for training, court sub- inspector Shamsul Alam said yesterday.
Earlier, on November 20, Additional CMM Ruhul Amin recorded arguments between the state and the defense lawyers and scheduled November 24 for delivery of verdict.
The six accused teachers were produced before the court yesterday. They are former RU vice-chancellor Dr M Saidur Rahman Khan, Syndicate member and Progotishil Teachers Association convenor Dr M Abdus Sobhan, Prof Moloy Bhoumik, Prof Dulal Chandra Biswas, Prof Sayed Selim Reza Newton and Prof Abdullah Al Mamun.
They were charged for observing strike en masse on July 26, holding protest procession on August 21, and instigating the August 22 campus violence.
The teachers' activities were violation of the emergency power rules of 2007, said the charges.
Former officer-in-charge of Motihar police station Khondoker Ferdous Ahmed lodged the case against three teachers on August 26 after Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested Saidur, Sobhan and Moloy.
Investigation officer of the case sub-inspector Nasir Uddin Mondol submitted charge sheet accusing six teachers on September 1 and the court framed charges on September 17.
