Robber killed, 5 others hurt in mob beating

A robber was killed and five others were injured in mob beating at Holdigul village under Rajnagar upazila of the district on Saturday night, police said. The dead was identified as Mizan Miah, 28, son of Nurul Islam of Gobindapur village of Madhabpur upazila in Habiganj district. The injured are Shafiqul Islam, 28, of Chunarughat upazila in Habiganj, Shamim Miah, 25, of Kulaura upazila in Moulvibazar, Faruk Miah, 22, of Chunarughat upazila in Habiganj, Faruk Miah, 30, of Baniachong upazila in Habiganj and Abdul Kadir, 28, of Brahmanbaria district. They are undergoing treatment at Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital. Rajnagar police and locals said movement of six unknown persons at the village at around 9:00 pm on Saturday has created suspicion among the villagers. They challenged them and started beating. As a result, six of them were injured. Being informed, law enforcers from Rajnagar Police Station rushed to the spot, rescued them from the wrath of people and sent them to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital where Mizan died yesterday morning. Contacted, Sub-Inspector Abu Sayeed Chowdhury of Rajnagar Police Station confirmed the incident, saying all the six are members of a gang of robbers named Shayeta Bahini. Local people caught them while they were preparing for committing a robbery at the Holdigul village, the SI added.
