Flood situation worsens in Netrakona

Our Correspondent, Netrakona
Flood situation deteriorated in Netrakona yesterday morning, submerging 3,000 hectares of Irri-Boro crops. Water level of the river Dhanu marked a sharp rise following onrush of water from the hills across the border. Two flood protection embankments -- Chuniar Badh in Khaliajuri upazila and Chor Haijrar Badh in Mohonganj upazila -- were damaged by floodwaters. As a result, Jalor Haor, Chunar Haor and Lama Haor in Khaliajuri upazila, Mandarbari, Chandpur and Gaglajur Haor in Mohonganj upazila -- have been inundated by floodwaters, Khaliajuri and Mohongonj upazila officials said. Another six flood protection embankments -- Kirthonkhula, Ranichapur, Chowterbadh, Lepsia, Paier Badh and Selapara Badh in Khliajuri upazila -- have been seriously threatened by floodwaters and are likely to collapse, Netrakona WDB sources said yesterday. Locals joined their hands voluntarily to protect the six embankments threatened by the onrush of hilly waters.
