'Awareness to help curb human trafficking'
Speakers at a day-long workshop held in Chaughacha upazila in Jessore said trafficking of women and children will be prevented by creating awareness among people of all walks of life, says a press release.
Held at the Grameen Unnayan Sangstha auditorium in Chaughacha, the experience sharing workshop was jointly organised by Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM) and Concern Universal. DAM programme co-coordinator Roushan Ara presided the workshop on woman and child trafficking.
DAM has been conducting the programmes for combating woman and child trafficking in 10 unions of four upazilas in Jessore and Sathkhira districts with the technical support of Concern Universal and with the financial support of European Commission and Irish AID Ireland.
Speakers said that efforts should be made to make people aware enough so that they do not give shelter to unknown persons or give marriage to their daughters with someone without proper information and on false promise of jobs.
They said that more and more hardcore poor, widow and women deserted by husbands are becoming victims of human trafficking.
Speakers cautioned participants saying that traffickers are adopting various techniques for maintaining their network. They urged members of the law enforcement agencies
to adopt appropriate techniques to face the challenge. They stressed on police-public representative joint initiative to counter the social ill.
Concern Universal research specialist Shankar Pal conducted the workshop.
Arab Ali, Youth Development Officer of Chaugacha, Sheikh Feroze Ahmed, BRDB Officer, Bacchu Sikder, Social Welfare Officer, Babul Akhter, education officer, Salma Bikquis, Women Affairs Officer and Abdul Gani, Company Commander, BDR spoke in the seminar as guests.
Among others, Union parishad Chairmen, members, police, Ansar and local journalists were present at the recently held workshop.
