'Ensure rights of Harijans'
Speakers at a workshop here yesterday urged the government to enact laws to ensure rights of Harijan in every sphere of social life.
They also called for raising awareness so that Harijans can enjoy equal status in society.
The workshop on 'Harijan: Past: Present : Future', was organized by FAIR, a local NGO, with assistance from Dhaka based NGO Manusher Jonno.
Nazrul Islam, former Deputy Director of Social Welfare Department and team leader of Harijan Advocacy Group presented the keynote paper at the workshop held at Zilla Parishad auditorium. Former lawmaker and chairman of Kushtia municipality Badrudozza Gama inaugurated the programme.
Dr. Moslem Uddin, Registrar of Kushtia Islamic University (KIU) was chief guest while writer and columnist Prof. Dr. Rashid Askari and Amanur Rehmen Aman, Assistant Registrar of Islamic University addressed the programme as special guests.
According to findings by FAIR, at least 10, 000 Harijan people live in JKUshtia and half of them are deprived of civic rights.
Harijan children are the worst victims of social deprivation as they are not allowed in all educational institutions.
