411 more cases to be dropped

The government yesterday recommended withdrawal of 411 more 'politically-motivated' cases, including five corruption-related, filed during the tenure of BNP-Jamaat alliance and the past caretaker government. The national committee to review the politically motivated cases identified those as politically motivated and recommend for withdrawal, State Minister for Law Qamrul Islam told reporters after its 19th meeting. A total of 761 cases, including 12 corruption-related, were placed before the meeting at the home ministry for withdrawal. After scrutiny, it recommended withdrawal of 411 cases and rejected 90 others. With this, the committee has so far recommended withdrawal of 5,539 cases considering those as 'politically motivated'. Of them, 411 are graft related cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). A total of 8,666 cases were submitted to the committee from different districts for withdrawal. “About 3,000 more cases are now under scrutiny of the committee,” said the state minister, adding that they would sit in another one or two meetings to complete the process. State Minister for Home Shamsul Hoque Tuku and senior home ministry and police officials were present at the meeting.
