Seven die in road crashes

At least seven people were killed in separate road accidents in Sirajganj and Narayanganj yesterday. A correspondent from Sirajganj reports: At least four people were killed and three others injured in separate road accidents in the district yesterday. The deceased were identified as Sourav, 6, and Nipa, 5, of Haydarpur village, Altaf Hossain, 35, of Baghbari village under Kamarkhand upazila and Sohel, 28, of Sadar upazila. Police said an accident occurred when a Dhaka-bound covered-van of Korotoa service collided head-on with a passenger bus in Baalukole area. Nuru Mia along with his family members was going to attend the janaza of his relative by the bus from Koddarmore area. Locals rushed the severely injured Nuru, his wife Sokhina Khatun, their son Sourav, daughter Nipa and his brother Sanwar to Sirajganj General Hospital. Sourav and Nipa succumbed to their injuries at the hospital while the others are undergoing treatment. Of the injured, Sakhina's condition was stated to be critical. Meanwhile, a passerby was killed in Bagbari area near Jamuna bridge west connecting road when an autorickshaw hit him while he was crossing the road. The deceased was identified as Altaf Hossain. Altaf succumbed to his injuries in Sirajganj General Hospital. In another incident, a man was killed when a speedy truck ran over him at Chandidasgati in the district. The victim was identified as Sohel. He was rushed to Sirajganj Hospital from where he was shifted to Dhaka. He died in the evening. A correspondent from Narayanganj adds: A college student was killed when a truck turned upside down and hit her at Vitekandi under Sonargaon upazila yesterday. The deceased was identified as Salma Akhtar Shila, 22, daughter of Salauddin Mia of Vitekandi village in the district. Sub-Inspector (SI) Ajay Pal of Sonargaon police station said the accident occurred at around 10:30am yesterday when Salma was waiting for a bus at Vitekandi bus stand. A goods-laden truck hit her while it was trying to give side to a pick-up van coming from the opposite direction, leaving her dead on the spot. Another report says: At least two people were killed and two others injured in a head-on collision between a microbus and a truck in the Tarabo Pourosova area under Rupganj upazila yesterday. The deceased were identified as microbus driver Mosharraf Hossain, 27, and its passenger Swapna Akhtar, 22, Officer-in-Charge Forkan Shikder of Rupganj police station said the accident occurred at around 11:45pm on Tuesday. The injured were admitted to Dhaka Medical Collage and Hospital.
