Govt to reopen five jute mills
The government has taken steps to reopen five jute mills under Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC).
Tk 173 crore was allocated in the proposed budget for this purpose.
Talking to BSS, Textile and Jute Secretary Ashraful Maqbul yesterday said the jute mills are Peoples' Jute Mills in Khulna, Daulatpur Jute Mills, Qoumi Jute Mills in Sirajganj, MM Jute Mills in Chittagong and Rajshahi Jute Mills.
He said all 27 jute mills would be modernised for increasing production.
About Adamjee Jute Mills, he said the previous government closed down the mill, but the present government has taken a plan to set up a modern jute mill there.
In the current year jute was cultivated in 6,89,000 acres of land, which is 40 percent more than the previous year, a ministry source said.
Eight jute mills of BJMC were closed down due to incurring loss, of those five were leased out in the private sector.
