13,000 policemen to be recruited

Home Minister Advocate Sahara Khatun yesterday said the government is going to recruit 13,000 new policemen in addition to the existing 1.24 lakh contingent of the force to build it as a people-friendly organisation. Gradually, the number of new recruits would be increased to 32,000, the home minister told a rally organised in connection with inauguration of the service delivery centre of Golapganj Model Thana in the district as the chief guest. She said the government has already taken various steps for making the police service available to the people. Sahara said the government has already upgraded 35, out of 450 police stations, throughout the country to model police stations with the assistance provided by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Of the model police stations, 17 are working as service delivery centre, she added. Sahara said the law and order situation in the country is now better than any time in the past. She said, "We want the development of the law and order situation, but the opposition does not like it." About the June 27 hartal called by the opposition, she said hartal and blockade programmes cannot bring any development to the country. She, however, warned that the people as well as the government would not tolerate any kind of anarchy and disorder in the name of hartal. Police super of Sylhet M Shakawat Hossain chaired the function while Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid was the special guest. The rally was also addressed by lawmaker Syeda Zebunnesa Haq, Awami League Organising Secretary Advocate Mesbah Uddin Siraj, Divisional Commissioner of Sylhet M Golam Rabbani, Golapganj Upazila Chairman Iqbal Ahmed Chowdhury and DIG of Sylhet range Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan.
