Couple's death : Call to punish culprits

Staff Correspondent
Hundreds of people formed a human chain in front of the Jatiya Press Club yesterday demanding exemplary punishment to the people responsible for the death of a couple in a road accident in the capital. Family members and colleagues of victim SM Saiful Huda Shahin, a sales executive of the Structural Engineering Ltd, organised the programme. A bus killed Shahin and his pregnant wife Shoheli Akhter Shampa, administrative officer of the daily Janakantha, at the Moghbazar intersection on June 12. "The culprits must be punished. We hope the government will set an example by awarding the highest punishment to the killers," said Shaheen's brother Najmul Huda Shamim. Ilias Kanchan, actor and president of Nirapad Sarak Chai, said most accidents happen due to reckless driving. Bus owners rent out their buses on a daily basis, making the drivers desperate to go for as many trips as possible to maximise earnings, he said. Speakers said the authorities concerned should take stern action against the owners of rundown vehicles and the providers of fake licence.
