3 UPDF men held in Rangamati

Three members of United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) were arrested by forces from two areas of the district yesterday and on Thursday. Joint forces in a pre-dawn raid yesterday arrested two UPDF men. The arrestees are Pari Bhadra Chakma, 28, son of Bini Mohan Chakma of village Dighalchhari Kutukchhari union under Sadar upazila and Indrajit Chakma, son of Nil Kamol Chakma of village Hadboria of Aimachhara union under Barkal upazila, Kotwali police said. Acting on a tip-off, police and army from Suvalong Bazar camps raided Master Para early morning and arrested the two UDPF members while they were visiting the houses of their relatives there. Members of the joint forces recovered a few 'receipt books' from their possession, police said. Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Md Joynal at Kotwali police station said they have lodged a case in this connection. Shantideb Chakma, district unit leader of UPDF, yesterday protested the arrest terming it an undemocratic act. In a similar raid on Thursday, another UPDF man was held with a SMG (sub-machine gun) and 72 bullets from Kharikkhiyang area under Sadar upazila. The arrested youth was identified as Shishu Moni Chakma alias Pabitra, 25, son of Benga Chakma of village Rangapani in the town, Kotwali police said. Being informed, army from Naniachar camp and police from Kotwali police station early Thursday went to the spot and nabbed the youth when he along with three other members of UPDF were allegedly collecting toll from an engine boat carrying pineapples. Armed UPDF members opened fire on the joint forces sensing their presence. Army also retaliated with several shots. At one stage, Shishu Moni was caught by the joint forces while the rest managed to flee the scene, Kotwali police said. The joint forces also recovered a SMG and 72 bullets from the possession of the arrestee. Michael Chakma, district unit leader of Gonotantrik Jubo Forum, an associate body of UPDF later claimed that Shishu Moni was arrested without any firearms and termed the incident as a conspiracy.
