Edn, research get low allocation
Dhaka University (DU) authorities placed a Tk 230.09 crore budget for the 2010-11 fiscal year at the senate meeting yesterday, with education and research receiving 'very low allocation'.
DU Treasurer Prof Mizanur Rahman placed the budget on the first day of the two-day annual senate session at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban.
Of the total amount, Tk 23.83 crore -- only 10.35 percent of the total budget -- has been earmarked for education-related sectors such as research, purchasing of books, journals and chemicals, students' transport facilities, sports, study tour and seminar and conference.
The allocations for these sectors have increased by around Tk one crore, compared to the previous year's budget.
Like ever year, the lion's share of the budget -- Tk 148.74 crore -- would be spent on salaries and allowances for teachers, officials and employees.
The authorities, however, have shown that the education-related sectors have got an allocation of a total of Tk 172.57 crore by adding the allocation for salaries and allowance for teachers and staffs to the amount earmarked for education-related sectors.
According to the budget, Tk 35 crore has been allocated for pension while Tk 4.50 crore for maintenance and repair work.
The internal income of the university has been estimated at Tk 26.30 crore while Tk 203.79 crore will come from the university grants commission.
DU Vice Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique presided over the annual session of the senate, a policy making body of the university.
In his address, Prof Arefin mentioned the overall academic and other developments that took place at the university in the last one year.
