2 die in Ctg road crashes

At least two people were killed in separate road accidents in Chittagong yesterday. One police officer was killed and three others, including two constables, were injured in a road accident at Dampara in the port city early hours of yesterday. The dead identified as Ferdous Alam Majumder, 28, was an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Chandgaon police station. The injured were constables Shahidullah and Abul Kalam Azad of the same police station and one Nirob, driver of the CNG-run autorickshaw that was carrying the police personnel. Police said the accident occurred when a speeding truck hit the autorickshaw in front of Dampara Police Line at around 12:15am while the policemen were were returning from patrol duty. Critically injured ASI Ferdous was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at around 3:00am. Body of ASI Ferdous was sent to his village home at Laksham in Comilla. Of the injured, Constable Shahidullah was undergoing treatment at Holy Crescent private hospital while Constable Abul Kalam Azad and Driver Nirob at Dampara Police Line Hospital. Another report adds: One person was killed and four others suffered burn, one critically, when a truck caught fire after it turned upside down and fell on a CNG-run autorickshaw at Sonaichhari of Sitakunda here on Monday night. The accident took place when a Jessor-bound truck turned upside down after one of its front wheels fell into pothole at the foot of a bridge on Dhaka-Chittagong highway at Jorr Amtol of Sonaichhari under Sitakunda upazila at around 11:45pm on Monday. The truck caught fire when it fell on a CNG-run auto-rickshaw, police and witnesses said. Helper of the truck was burnt alive and four others, including truck driver Masud Alam, 30, received burn injury. With over 60 percent burn injuries Masud, son of Naimul Islam of Bikrampur village under Jessore Sadar police station, was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital from where he was shifted to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said the sources. Others are undergoing treatment at Sitakunda Health Complex. Following the accident serious traffic congestion was created on the highway for several hours, said Md Wahidur Rahman PPM- Officer-in- Charge of highway police station at Baro Awlia under Sitakunda upazila. To worsen the situation a trailer (used to carry container) turned upside down on Dhaka-Chittagong road in front of Sonargaon Filling Station at Bhatiary under the same upazila at around 4:00am and a banana-laden truck overturned on Mirer Sarai Bazar under Mirer Sarai upazila at around 8:00am yesterday, he said.
