Eight killed in road accidents
At least eight people were killed and 25 others injured in separate road accidents in Pabna, Munshiganj, Chittagong, Barisal and Nilphamari yesterday and on Tuesday night.
Our correspondent from Pabna reports: At least two people, including a woman, were killed and five others injured when a speeding bus hit a three- wheeler Nasiman on Pabna-Rajshahi highway at village Nurpur Bipus yesterday.
The deceased were identified as Jahangir, 27, son of Haran Pramanik of village Gaspara and Anwara Begum, 34, wife of Nayeb Ali of village Bilviduri of Pabna Sadar upazila. Of them, Jahangir was the driver of Nasiman.
Police and the locals said the accident took place at about 12:00 noon when a Pabna-bound speeding bus of Rashed Paribahan hit a passenger-loaded Nasiman at Nurpur Bipus Mor as the bus driver lost his control over the steering. The bus driver, however, managed to escape.
Jahangir and Anwara died on the spot while five others were injured. Agitated mob put up barricade on the highway for one hour, causing traffic jam. Later, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
A correspondent from Munshiganj says: An 11-year old school student was killed when a bus ran over him on Dhaka-Mawa highway at Kuchiamora under Sirajdikhan upazila at around 3:45pm yesterday.
Mehedi Hasan, a student of class seven of local Ideal High School, died on the spot.
The agitated students set fire to a Dhaka-bound bus of Ilish Paribahan and damaged 15 other vehicles following the accident. They also put up barricade on the highway creating about 10-kilometre traffic jam on both the sides of Kuchiamora College Gate.
Later, police brought the situation under control. The traffic movement resumed after two hours on assurance of proper trial and punishment to the persons responsible for the death. Mehedi was the only son of Bobarok Hossain of Kuchiamora Kaijjar Char village.
Staff correspondent from Chittagong adds: A rickshaw-van puller was killed and his helper injured in a road accident here yesterday afternoon.
The victim identified as Abul Khair, 65, of East Umpur of Senbag under Noakhali was working as rickshaw van puller in the Pathantuli area.
Police said the accident occurred when a speeding oil-laden lorry knocked the van from behind in front of the Chittagong Customs House at around 2.30pm, leaving Khair dead on the spot and the helper injured.
A correspondent from Barisal adds: An unidentified youth aged about 22 died on the spot when a wheat-laden truck ran over him at Natoi on the borders of Agailjhara-Gouranadi yesterday afternoon.
Our correspondent from Nilphamari reports: The death toll rises to three with the death of one more person in a accident here on Tuesday night.
The accident occurred when a Chittagong-bound night coach from Dinajpur hit 10 roadside shops and crushed a number of people on Shaheed Zikrul Haque Road in Sayedpur town, killing three people and injuring 20 others.
Two people identified as Iftekhar Ahmed, 65, a rickshawpuller, and Rahed Chowrhury, 8, a kindergarten student, died on the spot.
Of the injured, Manir, 5, son of Kutubuddin of Saidpur town succumbed to his injuries at Sayedpur Upazila Hospital on Tuesday night.
