10 hurt in RMG unrest

At least 10 people including a sub-inspector were injured as the agitating workers of a sweater factory went on a rampage demanding pay hikes and clashed with police at Adamjee EPZ here yesterday. Badrul Alam, officer-in-charge of Siddhirganj Police Station, said around one thousand workers of Hilen Sweater factory were observing demonstration for the last few days demanding pay hikes. At one stage of their demonstration on Sunday morning, the agitating workers vandalised the factory and beat up its three officials--supervisor Zakir Hossain, floor-in-charge Shohagh and Rafiq. As the police rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control, the infuriated workers hurled brickbats on them that injured seven people including sub-inspector Nazmul Islam, sources said. Injured Zakir, Shohagh and Rafiq were rushed to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital while others at Khanpur Narayanganj Hospital. Kamruzzaman, managing director of the factory, said at least ten people including factory supervisor and officials were injured in the attack.
