Book on women's empowerment launched
University Press Limited (UPL) yesterday launched a book on the current condition of women empowerment in South Asia.
The book is focused on the enabling factors and barriers on three aspects of women empowerment such as women's voice, work and bodily integrity in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan.
Write-ups of eleven authors' of the three countries have been embedded in the book "Mapping Women's Empowerment: Experiences from Bangladesh, India and Pakistan".
"The book discusses a variety of discourses, debates, policies and interventions that have influenced the lives of women in South Asia, and identifies those that have led to positive changes in women's position and condition," said a statement of Brac Development Institute, supplied at the launch.
BRAC governing board member Tahrunnesa Abdullah unwrapped the book at the programme at CIRDAP auditorium in Dhaka.
Ainoon Nahar, professor and chair of the Department of Anthropology of Jahangirnagar University, described the different areas of empowerment regarding the bodily integrity.
Binayak Sen, research director of Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies, focused on the economic aspect of women empowerment and work related issues.
The book, edited by Firdous Azim, chair of the English and Humanities Department of BRAC University, is now available at Tk 650 at UPL sales centres and major bookstores in the city.
