Six killed in road crashes

At least six people were killed and 37 others injured in separate road accidents in Sirajganj, Satkhira and Mymensingh yesterday. A correspondent from Sirajganj reports: At least two people were killed and three others injured in a road accident on Bogra-Pabna highway in Baghabari area under Shahjadpur upazila of the district yesterday. The victims were identified as Jamal Uddin, 50, and Abdus Salam, 40, of Jalalpur Mohollah under Sadar upazila of Pabna. Police said the accident occurred at around 3:00am when a Dhaka-bound microbus collided head-on with a truck coming from the opposite direction in Baghabari area, leaving Jamal and Salam dead on the spot and injuring three others. However, the driver of the truck managed to escape along with the truck. Police sent the bodies to hospital morgue for autopsy. The injured were admitted to Bera upazila health complex. A case was lodged with Hatikumrul Highway police station in this connection. Our correspondent from Satkhira adds: Two people, including an elderly woman, were killed and 29 others injured in a road accident on Satkhira-Kaliganj road at Shatpur village in Kaliganj upazila yesterday. The deceased were identified as Mohammad Ali Sahaji, 50, son of Ishaque Ali Sahaji of village Bharashimla and Pagli Rani Ghosh, 60, wife of Sudhanya Ghosh of village Satpur in Kaliganj upazila. Quoting local people police said the accident occurred when a Satkhira-bound bus skidded off the road and fell into a ditch after hitting passersby, leaving Sahaji dead on the spot and 30 others injured, including the victim Pagli Rani Ghosh. The injured were taken to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex where Pagli Rani succumbed to her injuries at about 4:00pm. UNB from Mymensingh says: Sohel, 22, was killed on the spot when a bus hit him at Boilor crossing in Trishal upazila at 1:30pm. Local people damaged the bus. In another incident, a leguna fell into a roadside ditch at Cheler ghat in the same upazila after hitting a schoolboy at 7:00am. Mostafiz, 10, a student of class III, died on the spot while five passengers of leguna were injured in the accident.
