Bangladesh role model for developing countries

The newly appointed country representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Bangladesh, Rebecca Hansen, has termed Bangladesh a role model for the developing countries and hoped that she would be successful in her new assignment in Dhaka. Rebecca said this when she called on Bangladesh's Permanent Representative in the UN Dr AK Abdul Momen at his office in New York on Thursday, according to a message received in the city yesterday. During the meeting, Dr Momen welcomed Rebecca in Bangladesh and apprised her of Vision-2021 envisioned by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Despite many adversities, he said, the present government has been working to turn Bangladesh into a middle-income country by 2021 according to its roadmap. To this end, the Bangladesh envoy sought cooperation of the UN body to ensure 100 percent enrollment to schools by 2011 and 100 percent literacy rate by 2014, 100 percent sanitation by 2013 and 100 percent food security by 2012. Regarding the millennium development goals (MDGs), he said Bangladesh is on the way to achieving the first four goals out of the seven. "Bangladesh is also committed to the 8th MDG--'Global partnership for development'," he added. The envoy sought cooperation of the UNDP in the government initiatives for launching the 'School Lunch Programme' to check dropout of the students from the schools. In this regard, the UNDP representative assured her all-out assistance. Dr Momen also apprised Rebecca of the UNDP's role in preparing voter list and national ID cards to hold the 2008 general elections in a free, fair and neutral manner. To this end, Rebecca said the UNDP is very happy to work for holding the general elections in a free, fair and neutral manner to restore democracy in Bangladesh. As the president of the executive board of UNDP and a member of Unicef and Ecosoc, Dr Momen assured Rebecca of all sorts of cooperation and wished her success in Bangladesh. Economic Minister in Bangladesh Mission Md Nazibur Rahman and First Secretary Mohammad Khorshed Alam Khastagir were also present on the occasion, the message said.
