Tk 84cr to improve city sewerage system

The Government is going to set up 21.3km of new sewerage pipes and six more pumps under a project costing Tk84 crore for development of existing sewerage system in the city. Under the 'Interim Emergency Sewerage Construction Line and Rehabilitation Project- 2nd Phase', 37.25 km of sewerage pipeline and one pump would also be restored. The project is now waiting for approval of the Executive Committee of National Economic Council (Ecnec), said Planning Secretary M Habib Ullah Majumder. The project will be completed by 2012 with the main objective to solve sewerage problems at the mostly sewerage disconnected areas of the city on emergency basis. Mentioning that the existing sewerage network of the Dhaka Wasa is able to serve only 20 percent of the capital properly, the planning secretary said Dhaka Wasa is working on preparing a master plan with the support of The World Bank to provide permanent sewerage solution to the city dwellers. It will take about three years to prepare the master plan, he said, adding," we have formulated this project for giving emergency solution to the most affected areas within this period." The first phase of the project was completed successfully at a cost of Taka 15.5 crore in 2009.
