Two saplings of the world's last naturally grown Talipalm tree, Corypha Taliera Roxburgh, were planted on the premise of Dhaka University vice-chancellor's official residence yesterday. Dr Hasan Mahmud, state minister for environment and forest, formally inaugurated the Talipalm plantation programme by planting a sapling on the bungalow premise. Vice-chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique of the university also planted a sapling of the mother Talipalm tree that was dying out on the campus. DU officials said the saplings were planted to make sure the Talipalm would live on earth. The officials said a number of saplings would be planted on the campus soon and some others distributed amongst the arboriculture and forest departments of the government and other institutions. The Botany Department and arboriculture office of DU has grown in nursery some 500 saplings collecting seeds from the mother Talipalm. Moreover, nearly 1,000 saplings have grown naturally under the mother tree. The last member of naturally grown Talipalm on earth was alive on the premise of DU pro-vice-chancellor's official residence with risk of extinction. The mother tree of Talipalm dies after it produces seeds once in life.
