Remove barriers to quality higher education

President Zillur Rahman yesterday said the private universities must take measures to remove all barriers to imparting quality higher education for their own interest. “The universities would have to be turned into the highest center of excellence of practicing knowledge,” he said while speaking at the first convocation of University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre. The President said though presently more than 50 private universities operating in the country standard of education in many of them have been called into question. Many private universities have no adequate logistic and infrastructure facilities, capable teachers and well-equipped library, he said. Zillur Rahman observed that more sincere endeavors of the authorities of private universities are required to attain the desired goal of standard of higher education. He said about 1400 years ago renowned scholar of the then subcontinent Shil Bhadra, born in Dhaka, was a teacher of the ancient university of Nalanda. Famous Chinese traveler Hyun Sung accepted his discipleship being enchanted with deep knowledge of Shil Bhadra, he added. After 400 years, the President said, Atish Dipankar, the great ancient Buddhist scholar from Bikrampur, went to Tibet to enrich the Buddhism. Terming that era as the golden age of Bengal, the President said the then East-Bengal was known as a center of excellence for disseminating knowledge. “This golden era is no more. It's our responsibility to bring back of that rich history,” he observed. The Great War of Liberation is the most prestigious event of the country's history, he said, adding, the greatest Bengali of thousands years Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the architect of the liberation war. It's responsibilities of teachers and guardians to present the contribution of Bangabandhu as well as true history and tradition of the country before the new generation, he said. Congratulating the graduates, the President urged them to work being imbued with high principle for taking the country to a new zenith through serving the interest of the common people. A total of 146 students were conferred undergraduate and post graduate degrees from different disciplines while Mohammad Abdulla-Al-Mamun and M Aminur Rahman received gold medals from the President for their outstanding results. Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Professor Nazrul Islam spoke as the special guest while Under Secretary General of the United Nation Ameerah Haq spoke as the convocation speaker. ULAB Board of Governor President Kazi Shahid Ahmed and Vice Chancellor Professor Rafiqul Islam also spoke on the occasion. M Ghulam Sumdany Don spoke as the valedictorian.
