Contribution of Hena Das recalled

The speakers at a memorial meeting yesterday said Hena Das, a human rights activist of the country, is a source of inspiration for all the women in the country by her thoughts and works. Bangladesh Mahila Parishad organised the meeting at its auditorium in the city. On the occasion of her first death anniversary, the speakers termed her a unique woman who moved for political, social and cultural development. "Her life and activities are a source of inspiration for all of us. The courageous but polite, confident and non-communal woman stood against all social discriminations," said Maleka Banu, general secretary of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad. Hena played an active role in every movement of the country beginning from the anti-British movement. She raised her voice against discrimination during the Pakistan period and was a front liner during the Liberation War in 1971. After the liberation she was engaged in social development, women empowerment and democratic movements. Hena Das protested against all social injustice, exploitation and oppression and did not bow down to fear of torture, they said. "We should hold the spirit of her involvement in socio-cultural, national and democratic movements and her efforts, courage and strength among us to move the country forward," said President of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad Ayesha Khanam. Karmojibi Nari President Shirin Akhter said contribution of Hena Das in women empowerment must be remembered at all times "She was unique in all forms," said Quazi Faruque Ahmed, convener of National Teachers Employees Front who had the opportunity to work together with Hena Das in the teachers' movement. Son-in-law of Hena Das Dr Nazrul Islam and Dipti Shikder of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad also spoke at the meet.
