ARF meet in Hanoi today

Foreign Minister Dipu Moni left Dhaka Wednesday night for Vietnam's capital Hanoi to attend the 17th Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Regional Forum (ARF) meeting scheduled to be held today. Foreign ministers and foreign policy chiefs of the 27-member ARF will attend the meeting. ARF is the principal channel for multilateral security dialogue and cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region. On the sideline, Dipu Moni is due to hold meetings with foreign ministers of Japan and Myanmar and deputy prime minister of Vietnam. The ARF was established in 1994 with the objective to foster constructive dialogue and consultation on political and security issues of common interest and concern; and to make significant contributions towards confidence-building and preventive diplomacy in the Asia-Pacific region. ARF members are: Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, European Union, India, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Mongolia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Russia, Timor-Leste, United States and Sri Lanka. The foreign ministers from 10-member states of the Asean convened in Vietnam capital Hanoi Tuesday ahead of the 17th Asean Regional Forum to discuss regional integration and security enhancement. Asean was founded in 1967 and currently comprises Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
