30 shops gutted in Chittagong

Thirteen shops were gutted in a fire at a city market in Chaktai area early hours yesterday. Sources in Fire Service and Civil Defence said the fire broke out at a shop in Bera Market under Bakolia police station at around 6:30am and spread fast engulfing 12 adjoining shops. The fire originated from an electric short-circuit causing damage to goods worth around Tk 30 lakh, said Niaz Ahmed, senior station officer of Lamar Bazar Fire Station. Four units from different fire stations of the city rushed to the spot and doused the fire after three-hours of efforts, he added.
