Willful delay in delivering MRP

The Department of Immigration and Passports (DIP) officials are procrastinating over giving Machine Readable Passport (MRP) to the applicants. This was detected by MRP Project Director (PD) Brig Gen Refayet Ullah during his surprise visit to the Comilla passport office yesterday. The PD came across a startling anomaly in the passport delivery system. He discovered that MRPs were ready but those were not being delivered to the applicants while the government is trying to expedite the MRP project in the country. He saw some MRP applicants wait outside to receive their passports. "This has been a common phenomenon in Comilla passport office,” a DIP official told The Daily Star requesting anonymity. He said the MRP applicants are repeatedly sent back although their passports are ready for delivery. The MRP of Shafiul Alam was printed on June 24 and sent to Comilla passport office on July 3. But he was not given the MRP although he went to passport office twice in the last three weeks. Every time he was asked to appear again. Amran Uddin, another MRP applicant, was similarly harassed though his passport was prepared for handing over on July 18. Contacted the project director termed the incident very unfortunate. He said he informed the higher authorities of the matter. The officials have been requested not to make any further delay, the PD added. There are widespread allegations against some DIP staff that are not happy over the introduction of MRP. They are intentionally delaying issuance of modern passport. Bangladesh introduced the MRP on April 1 this year to meet an aviation deadline set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
