A section of leaders of garment workers yesterday threatened to call strike at the factories if their demands, including Tk 5,000 as minimum wage, are not fulfilled by this month. The leaders give the ultimatum to the government and garment factory owners at a rally organised by the Garment Worker Trade Union Kendra (GWTUK) at Muktangon in the city. The also demanded accommodation facility, introduction of rationing system, medical allowance and provident fund for the workers. Montu Ghosh, an adviser of GWTUK, said a vested quarter is hatching conspiracy to deprive the garment workers of their basic demands. The plan of forming industrial police is an attempt to repress the garment workers, he said. The government may announce the minimum salary structure by July 28. Workers have been demanding a monthly salary of Tk 5,000, which is Tk 1,662.50 now. GWTUK General Secretary KM Ruhul Amin said they are waiting for the announcement. "If our demands are not reflected in the announcement, we will go for greater movement, he added. Tuhin Chowdhury, MA Shahin and KM Mintu also spoke at the rally.
