'Fix minimum wage for RMG workers by July 28'

Leaders of All Party Garment Worker Oikya yesterday demanded fixation of Tk 5,000 as minimum wage for garment workers by July 28 said a press release. The leaders made the warning at a rally organised by the organisation at city's Muktangon area. They also warned of greater movements including strike if their demands are not fulfilled. The leaders demanded owners to provide accommodation facilities, introduction of rationing system, medical allowance and provident funds for the workers. The government is yet to announce the minimum wage as promised within this month, they said adding that factory owners are creating pressure and hatching a plot to annul the initiation. Earlier, garment leaders and workers observed a one-minute's silence to pay tribute to garments worker Beauty and demanded exemplary punishment to the persons responsible for her death. An adviser of Garments Worker Trade Union Kendra Montu Ghosh presided over the rally where President of Textile Garments Workers Federation Mahbubur Rahman Ismail, President of Samannito Garments Sramik Federation Rafiqul Islam Pothik spoke.
