Call to speed up war crimes trial
A section of public university teachers yesterday demanded the government to speed up the trial of war criminals and finish it within this year.
They made the demand at a rally organised by 'Bishwabidyalaya Swadhinata Shikkhak Parishad', at the Central Shaheed Minar in the city. They also organised a human chain in front of the National Press Club on this issue.
The leaders of the teachers called upon the government to impose ban on politics of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir. They said Jamat, Shibir committed the worst crime against humanity during the War of Liberation.
"They killed and aided in the killing of 30 lakh people and tortured and humiliated two lakh women during the War of Liberation”, said Prof Munaz Ahmed, general secretary of Buet's teachers' association.
"No nation has faced history of killing such a large number of people with the help of local collaborators in the War of Liberation", he added.
Speakers warned the government for troublemaker who are spreading propaganda against the trial in home and abroad.
"Some anti-liberation groups including war criminals become active and forming platforms to hatch conspiracies to foil the trial process", said Saidul Haque Chowdhury, convener of the organisation, adding that a powerful quarter even within the state apparatus was doing many destructive activities to spoil the move.
The teachers' leaders called upon mass people to come forward and raise a mass movement against the conspiracies with spirit of the War of Liberation.
Mohammad Anowarul Islam, president of teachers association of National University of Bangladesh, Prof Mohammad Arzu Mia, general secretary of Jahanggirnagor University teachers association, Prof. Saifuddin, general secretary of Jagannath University teachers association, Prof Anowar Hossain, a syndicate member of University of Dhaka, Abul Mannan, Vice-Chancellor of Agricultural University, Bangladesh, Prof Dr Mohammad Alauddin, Vice-Chancellor of Chittagong University, general secretary of teachers association of University of Dhaka Prof Dr Khandakar Bazlul Haque spoke on the occasion while Prof. Dr. M Ahiduzzaman was in the chair.
