CU students protest fee hike

Students of Chittagong University (CU) staged demonstrations on the campus yesterday protesting the recent fee hike. From a rally during the agitation, the students announced an indefinite strike from attending classes and examinations from Tuesday and to halt activities of the Agrani Bank, CU campus branch, which receives fees from the students. The university authority and police foiled a Human chain by several hundred students in front of Arts Faculty at about 11:30am. Later, the students brought out a procession that paraded the campus demanding immediate withdrawal of the additional fees and gathered in front of the administrative building to agitate. During the agitation, the CU Proctor Professor Jasim Uddin, Assistant Proctor Chandan Kumar Poddar and Student Affairs Adviser Professor Towhid Hossain reportedly had a row with the students. Meanwhile, CU Board of Residence, Health and Discipline at a meeting expelled a student for two years on charge of manhandling two teachers during yesterday's agitation. The board at the meeting presided over by the CU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Abu Yusuf expelled Sujan Kanti Dey, a second year student of public administration, and also issued show cause notice to five others to explain why action will not be taken against them. Expelled student is an assistant secretary of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front of CU unit.
