City BCL council today
Council of Bangladesh Chhatra League's Dhaka city north and south units will be held today, after an eight-year gap, for selecting new leadership for one-year tenure.
This year BCL leaders not over 29 years old will be qualified to contest for the posts of presidents and general secretaries in the two vital units of the student body.
The council will start at city's Engineers' Institution, Bangladesh at 9:00am and senior Awami League and former BCL leaders will address.
In the south unit leading president candidates are Shaheen Ahmed Sagor, Anisur Rahman Anis and Gazi Sarwar Babu, among others while the general secretary candidates are Shahdat Hossain Shadu, Khorshed Alam Masud and Zabed Ahmed.
In the north unit possible president candidates include Nasirul Hasan Shojib, Habibur Rahman Habib, Quazi Sazed Hossain, Anwar Hossain while vital general secretary candidates are Miraz Hossain, SM Sayem, Anwar Hossain Pasha, Anisur Rahman Razeeb and Anisur Rahman Nayeem.
Leaders and workers of both the units have become much enthusiastic with the occasion. Council to the units was last held in July 2002.
BCL central committee has already formed two separate election commissions to conduct the polls.
Farhad Hossain, an election commissioner for the south unit said AL and former BCL leaders will select leadership to the units.
The BCL constitution, however, says that leadership to its units would be elected through voting.
Before forming the central BCL leadership in 2004, the then organizational chief of BCL, Sheikh Hasina, fixed the age limit.
