'124 victims of crimes in safe custody'
A total of 124 victims of different criminal activities are staying in the safe custody of 29 jails across the country, the inspector general (IG-prisons) has informed the High Court (HC) yesterday.
Among the victims, 65 are male and 59 female, Ashraful Islam Khan, IG-prisons, said in a report, which was submitted to the court as per its earlier order.
A division bench of the HC comprised of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain accepted the report and fixed today for order on this issue.
Deputy Attorney General Nazrul Islam Talukder submitted the report prepared by the prisons chief on July 7, as the HC bench on June 10 asked for a list of people, women in particular, who are now in different types of custody across the country as victims of rape, abduction, acid throwing and any other criminal activities.
The court had passed the order following a writ petition filed by three Supreme Court lawyers -- Mahbub Shafique, KM Hafizul Alam and Imranul Hye Sajib -- on the basis of a June 4 report in the daily Jugantor.
The report said Md Bullet Miah, a local Jubo League leader of Kawnia upazila, violated 22-year-old woman, keeping her confined for 10 days in May.
