Six days into her death, police are yet to unravel the mystery surrounding the death of the nineteen-year-old garment worker, Beauty Akhter. Beauty, an employee of Vertex Garment Ltd at Kalwala Para in Mirpur, was allegedly murdered and thrown from the eight-storey building of the factory on Friday. “The factory authorities are trying to divert the motive of the case to protect the five accused,” Beauty's father Abul Kalam told The Daily Star. So far, only Jharna Begum, a prime suspect, was handed over to police by her fellow workers following Beauty's death, he said. He claimed the accused are still at large and Mintu, a supervisor and also an accused, even attended the factory. However when contacted, factory manager Nazrul Islam Malum told The Daily Star that Mintu had fled soon after the incident. Mirpur police said the case of Beauty's death was transferred to the Detective Branch (DB) on July 25. Nazrul Islam, sub-inspector of DB and investigation officer of the case, said on completion of Jharna's three-day remand she was sent to jail through a Dhaka Court yesterday. He said they have not ascertained whether it was a murder or suicide as they are yet to receive post mortem report. Senior lecturer of Dhaka Medical College (DMC), Abul Khair, said the autopsy was performed and the report was submitted to the Forensic Medicine Department of DMC a few days ago. However, he could not say for certain whether police had collected the report.
