HC stays ministry order for 3 months
A Division Bench of the High Court yesterday stayed for three months the order issued by the local government ministry sacking 431 employees of Sylhet City Corporation (SCC).
The bench comprising Justice Khairul Haq and Justice Abdul Awal passed the order upon a writ petition filed on behalf of the sacked employees, according to a faxed message received at the SCC office from Dhaka yesterday evening, sources at SCC said. Details and a copy of the verdict is awaited, they said.
The HC Bench also issued a rule returnable within four weeks asking the government to reply why the order for sacking the employees would not be declared illegal, the sources said.
Meanwhile the SCC at its scheduled meeting yesterday discussed the situation and other issues.
The meeting chaired by acting mayor Azam Khan was attended by all the ward commissioners and SCC officials, meeting sources said. The meeting continued when the report was filed at about 8 pm yesterday.
A stalemate is prevailing at the SCC office where virtually no work is being done since the LGRD ministry order reached last week.
Except an engineer, all the sacked employees are master roll staff. They were sacked after a probe report said they were taken in illegally.
