Students protest new admission system
A group of Dhaka University students of Institute of Education and Research (IER) yesterday protested the new admission system for freshers to the institute.
Over 50 students of the institute blockaded the road in front of the vice-chancellor's official residence at around 10:00am demanding cancellation of the new admission policy for the first year students.
DU academic council at a meeting on Wednesday decided to take students for first year BEd courses to IER through "Kha" and "Gha" unit admission tests this year instead of arranging separate examinations under the institute.
The agitating students lifted the blockade at around 11:00am after Vice Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique assured them of discussing the issue in the meeting.
“I have told the students that there is nothing to worry about the admission as IER teachers will remain involved with the admission process,” Arefin told The Daily Star.
DU administrators said the decision of introducing new admission system was taken to cut expenses and time of the admission seekers.
After passing HSC or its equivalent examinations, every year students have to take admission test to qualify for Bed courses under the IER.
The students said they want the old system to continue.
DU authorities alleged that some senior IER students and teachers are instigating the students for their own interests.
