<i>Signs of massacre disappearing </i>
Planned 8 monuments yet to be built in Mouilvibazar
No monument has been built in the eight selected spots in the district which bear horrifying memories of massacre by Pakistani occupation forces during Liberation War.
The then government is 1991 selected the eight spots from among 56 'slaughter places' and mass-graves in Moulvibazar for construction of monuments but nothing has been done.
The spots were chosen by a joint team of Bangladesh army and district administration at the initiative of the ministry of liberation war affairs to preserve the history of war in Moulvibazar.
During the war, Pakistani occupation forces and their collaborators brought several hundred freedom fighters and innocent people from different areas and killed them in the 56 spots. The bodies were buried in mass greaves.
These spots were identified by local people after independence. These are at Kamalpur and Noria village in Sadar upazila, Panchgaon village in Rajnagar upazila, bank of Hakatir Dighi in Kulaura upazila, eastern side of rail track at Kulaura railway station in, Saypur in Baralekha upazila, Shamsernagar airport in Kamalganj upazila and Varaura in Srimongal upazila.
Due to negligence, these places of history of our liberation are being encroached or signs erected there by local people are being destroyed, sources in the district Muktijoddha Sangsad said.
Muktijoddha Sangsad leaders and the then district administration prepared statements of land owners, drew sketch of the proposed monuments at these spots and took initiative to acquire lands in 1999.
But later, the initiative died down for reasons not known.
Only a small structure was built on the mass grave at Shamsernagar airport which was a 'place for slaughter' during the war. The rest seven spots are as they were after Liberation.
Moulvibazar Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md Jahangeer Kabir, when contacted, said there is no initiative now to build monuments at the eight spots.
