BDR Mutiny Trial
Court upholds one mutineer’s 6-month jail over contempt
A BDR special court yesterday upheld its earlier verdict in which a mutineer was jailed for six months on charge of contempt of court and rejected bail petition of another accused.
BDR Director General (DG) Maj Gen Md Rafiqul Islam headed the Special Court-7, formed to try the mutineers of 24 Rifles Battalion and Rifles Security Unit.
The court on December 1 sentenced Sepoy Abdul Baset of 24 Rifles Battalion to six months of imprisonment on contempt of court charge.
Baset gave a written prayer to exempt him from the charge as well as imprisonment on December 7, which the court accepted on Saturday.
“The order is upheld. The written prayer is not taken into consideration,” said Rafiqul adding that Baset's imprisonment has come into effect since December 2.
Sepoy Al Mamun Juwel, one of the 667 accused, pleaded for bail on the previous proceeding day. He also urged the court to give explanation of the law under which they are being tried.
Refusing his bail plea, the DG said, “The court is not bound to give explanation of the law. You can learn it from a private lawyer or one of your accused friends.”
The court adjourned the trial proceedings till 9:00am on December 21.
